I would like to install VLC player on Linux Mint in order to watch a movie.
I used to use Fedora, and to install VLC I would use
yum -install VLC
What is the equivalent command in Linux Mint?

I would recommend installing VLC Media Player by using official packages from VideoLAN : Downloads by choosing your GNU/Linux distribution.
See the Downloads Section on the Site:
Either way you can just open Terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and write the following commands to install vlc media player.

I installed scientific linux 7. I would like to install Geany. I tried sudo yum install geany (in root) and also rpm but it didn't work. What can I do ? Do you have to install something before using yum and rpm ? I read there are repositories but I don't get it.
Thanks

Given this:
Looks like it's in the repository
extra
. I'm not using Scientific Linux, however given their release notes here:looks like
yum install yum-conf-extras
should enable the repository. You can then yum update
and yum install geany
